Gajates
Village
Gajates is a municipality in the Tierra de Alba comarca, in the province of Salamanca, also made up of the villages of Galleguillos and Valeros, with around 135 inhabitants. It was resettled by Ramiro II of León in the 10th century and appears as Gayates in the 13th century; owing to its closeness to the border with Castilla, Galleguillos was attacked and plundered in 1196 by Castilian troops. It preserves the church of El Salvador, built in the 13th century in Romanesque-Mudejar style, with an apse of seven sections separated by vertical bands, which holds inside it the Renaissance tomb of the cleric Pedro Aponte, from the 16th century; and the remains of El Palacio, the fortress erected in the 12th century as a resting place for King Alfonso VI of León after he granted land to the nobleman Pedro de Santadaría.
