What to see and do in Matilla de los Caños del Río

Matilla de los Caños del Río
Village
Matilla de los Caños del Río is a municipality in the Salamanca Campo Charro, which also groups together Canillas de Torneros, Carrascal de Sanchiricones, Linejo, Matas Altas, Ochando and Pocito, with around 607 inhabitants. Founded in the 14th century, its resettlement is attributed to Enrique Enríquez, married to María la Brava; on the crest of the hillside above the village remain the ruins of a medieval castle whose destruction was ordered in 1505 by Ferdinand the Catholic. In 1880 the whole district, including the town centre, passed into the hands of the senator José Rodríguez Yagüe, and the residents' fear of losing their homes sparked a popular uprising. It preserves a dolmen on the Linejo estate, from the fourth millennium BC, and its church of Santiago holds two works by the sculptor Venancio Blanco, a native son of the village.
Hermitage of el Cueto de Matilla
Monument
A seventeenth-century shrine about six kilometres from the village, with Rococo decoration inside and a Roman milestone reused as a column, evidence of an ancient road passing through these dehesas.
The crime of Matilla
Historical milestone
In 1880 a local uprising over land ownership ended with one dead and forty prosecuted; the affair, known as the crime of Matilla, illustrates the agrarian conflict of the Campo Charro in the nineteenth century.
