What to see and do in San Pelayo de Guareña

San Pelayo de Guareña
Village
San Pelayo de Guareña is a municipality in the Tierra de Ledesma district, in the province of Salamanca, whose territory, covering 27.69 square kilometres, also includes the settlements of Cañedo de las Dueñas and Espino Rapado, watered by the Cañedo stream, a tributary of the Tormes. It was reconquered by the kings of León after the capture of Ledesma, Salamanca and other towns by Ramiro II in the 10th century, and in 1136 Alfonso VII of León granted it to the bishopric of Salamanca under the name Sant Pelayo; in 1916 it changed its official name to San Pelayo de Guareña. Its Romanesque church is quite singular: the interior is arranged like an amphitheatre, with the altar on a lower level and the pews for worshippers rising in tiers above it. It has 86 inhabitants.

Monument
Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) on 13 July 1983, this Romanesque church has a most unusual interior arrangement: the altar sits on a lower level and the faithful attend mass from tiers that rise above it, as in a Roman theater.
