Almenara de Tormes
Village
Almenara de Tormes is a municipality in the comarca of the Tierra de Ledesma, in the province of Salamanca, whose name comes from the Arabic al-manara, the lighthouse or watchtower. Its origins go back to a pre-Roman hillfort and a dolmen on the hill overlooking the locality; already in the Middle Ages, after the reconquest of Ledesma by Ramiro II of León, the Leonese kings built a fortress here, and in 1167 Ferdinand II gave the village to the bishop of Salamanca. The stones of the original church of San Salvador were used to build the present church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, from the 12th century, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1993, whose beautiful portal makes it one of the finest examples of Salmantine Romanesque. It has around 302 inhabitants.
The Romanesque church of Almenara
Monument
Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in 1993, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is from the twelfth century and is considered one of the finest examples of Romanesque in the province; to build it, stones from the vanished church of San Salvador were reused.
The castle demolished by Alfonso XI
Monument
At the request of the councils of Salamanca, Zamora and Ledesma, Alfonso XI ordered on 26 August 1315 the demolition of the town's castle for the harm it caused to the inhabitants of the region; six days earlier the hamlet had returned to the council of Ledesma.
The hermitage of the Santo Cristo de las Batallas
Monument
Right in the urban centre, this hermitage preserves a polychrome wooden carving from the thirteenth or fourteenth century. The neighbouring parish church was sacked by Napoleonic troops and on the wall of one of its chapels bullet holes can still be seen.
