What to see and do in Torresmenudas

Torresmenudas
Village
Torresmenudas is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the La Armuña comarca, founded during the medieval resettlement by the kings of León within the jurisdiction of Ledesma. As early as the 12th century it appears mentioned as “Torres Menudas” in the charter that Ferdinand II of León granted to Ledesma in 1161. With about 192 inhabitants, its church of San Román Mártir is a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection): it preserves a 12th-century Romanesque doorway, from that same founding period, with two concentric round arches, while its tower dates from the 17th century. The village's main festival, the Lunes de Aguas, is celebrated on the Monday after Easter in honour of the Virgen de la Paz, patroness of the municipality, with Mass, a procession and the traditional hornazo meal.
The church of San Román Mártir
Monument
The church of San Román Mártir stands at the north-western edge of Torresmenudas, on the way to Aldearrodrigo. Of its original Romanesque fabric barely the 12th-century doorway survives, a round arch with three archivolts: the outer one, resting on the wall, decorated with plant and animal motifs, and the two inner ones on columns with historiated capitals of coarse carving. The rest of the church, with a single nave and square chancel, was rebuilt in the 16th century and renovated in the 20th. Declared a site of cultural interest on 6 May 1993, the tower, much later, is from the 17th century. The locality is already mentioned in the charter that Ferdinand II of León granted to Ledesma in 1161.
The Lunes de Aguas of the Virgen de la Paz
Activity
The main festival is the Lunes de Aguas, the Monday after Easter Monday, in honour of the patron saint: there is mass and a procession in the morning and in the afternoon the residents go up into the hills to eat hornazo, as in the rest of the province.
