What to see and do in Vega de Tirados

Vega de Tirados
Village
Vega de Tirados is a municipality in the Tierra de Ledesma district, in the province of Salamanca, founded during the medieval repopulation by the kings of León under the names Vega and Tyrados, within the archdeaconry of Ledesma. Its territory divides 139 inhabitants among several settlements, including Carrascalino, El Carmen, La Cabra, Las Cuestas, Tirados de la Vega and Vega de Tirados itself, and includes the depopulated hamlet of Baños de Ledesma. The Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church houses the image of the Cristo de las Aguas, while in Tirados de la Vega the remains of the Romanesque San Miguel church, in ruins since the late 19th century, are preserved.
The spa of Baños de Ledesma
Activity
In the deserted settlement of Baños de Ledesma, within the municipality of Vega de Tirados, mineral-medicinal waters flow that were already exploited in Roman times, when there were baths beside the road linking Salamanca with Ledesma, attested by coins from the time of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus found at the site. After the Arab domination, Ramiro II of León ordered the place to be resettled in the year 939, and in 1164 Ferdinand II granted it to the church of Salamanca; during the Middle Ages it had an archpriesthood, and its waters, of recognised curative power, were even recommended by the physician of the Catholic Monarchs. In 1931 the spa was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument, and the present facilities, dating from 1975, were renovated in 1989. Today the deserted settlement has barely two registered inhabitants.
The church of San Miguel de Tirados
Monument
In Tirados de la Vega stand the ruins of the church of San Miguel, a church of Romanesque origins abandoned at the end of the nineteenth century. In the parish church of La Asunción the image of the Cristo de las Aguas is kept.
