Berrocal de Salvatierra
Village
Berrocal de Salvatierra is a municipality in the Salvatierra sub-comarca, in Guijuelo, province of Salamanca, made up of the hamlets of Berrocal, Las Dehesillas and Los Recios, the latter two now depopulated. It sits among hills, one of them Peña Abunacada, where its 18th-century church of the Asunción stands; on the slopes of El Carrascal, the highest point of the municipal area, the Alhándiga river rises. It was founded during the resettlement of Alfonso IX of León in the early 13th century, within the Alfoz de Salvatierra; in 1833 it passed to Salamanca. In the mid-19th century it had 394 inhabitants, according to Pascual Madoz, a figure now reduced to 74 through emigration; its residents live from farming and livestock raising. On 2 July it celebrates the Visitation of the Virgin together with neighbouring villages.
