Alba de Tormes
Village
Alba de Tormes is the most important centre of the eastern Campo Charro and capital of the comarca of the Tierra de Alba, in the province of Salamanca, Castile and León, with about 5,100 inhabitants. It was founded by the Vaccaei as a large castro called Alvia, later colonised by Romans and Muslims, and repopulated in the Middle Ages by the kings of León, who created here the council of Alba, divided into several cuartos; in 1140 Alfonso VII granted the villa its own fuero. The town keeps in the convent of the Annunciation the tomb of Saint Teresa of Jesus, who founded her eighth Carmelite convent there in 1571 and died on 4 October 1582. Of its ducal castle the Armería tower still stands, with frescoes by Cristóbal Passini.
