What to see and do in San Martín del Castañar

San Martín del Castañar
Village
San Martín del Castañar is a municipality of around 233 inhabitants in the comarca of the Sierra de Francia (Salamanca), given in 1225 by Alfonso IX of León to the bishop of Salamanca as a private lordship. Despite its small size, it receives numerous visitors at Easter and in summer, with its main festivities in August. Its chief attraction is the castle, from the 15th century, built by order of the count of Miranda del Castañar for his daughter and son-in-law; it now houses a cemetery and an interpretation centre devoted to the biosphere. From the village a circular path of about nine kilometres sets off towards Sequeros and Las Casas del Conde, lined with works of contemporary art and carvings made from old olive trees.

Monument
Declared a monument on 24 July 1981, it presides over the plaza de la Iglesia of a town whose entire old quarter has been a historic-artistic site since 12 November 1982, with its castle, its cemetery inside the bullring and its mountain houses.
The lordship of the Bishop of Salamanca
Historical milestone
Alfonso IX of León donated the town in 1225 to the bishop of Salamanca as a private lordship, which kept it outside the county of Miranda del Castañar and explains much of its later development as the ecclesiastical head of the range.
