What to see and do in Garcibuey

Garcibuey
Village
Garcibuey is a Salamanca municipality of about 186 inhabitants, in the Sierra de Francia, living from very intensive mountain farming: cherries, plums and peaches, as well as chestnut, holm oak and oak trees. Founded as part of the resettlement undertaken by Alfonso IX of León in the early 13th century, it was included in the alfoz of Miranda del Castañar. In the 1940s the village built, with volunteer labour and in the depths of the post-war period, the Palla pond and an irrigation reservoir of 3,000 cubic metres that secured water even for the most distant vegetable plots. In the 1960s the San Andrés wine cooperative operated. Madoz himself noted the importance of its fruit as early as the 19th century, and a mountain couplet recalls it with the line “y en Garcibuey las pasas.”
The cherries of Garcibuey
Food and drink
The agriculture of the municipal district, intensive and on small mountain plots, is based on fruit trees: cherries, plums and peaches. Old mountain verses already named the village for its raisins, alongside the winepress workers of Las Casas and the vintners of Monforte.
