What to see and do in San Miguel de Valero

San Miguel de Valero
Village
San Miguel de Valero is a municipality of around 308 inhabitants in the Sierra de Francia, sub-comarca of Las Quilamas, province of Salamanca, watered by the río Alagón and several streams of the Tagus basin. Remains of pottery, dolmens and cave paintings show that the district has been inhabited since prehistory. The name comes from the Roman Valerius, owner of a villa in the area, to which the saint's name was added after the church was built in the late 15th century; it preserves a Mudejar artesonado ceiling, and Arab influences are noticeable in the village's narrow streets. In the Middle Ages the legendary battle of Segolluela between Muslims and Don Rodrigo is set here, the origin of the legend of Queen Quilama, and in the 17th century the village became part of the marquisate of Valero, under the duke of Béjar.
