What to see and do in Valero

Valero
Village
Valero is a village of around 269 inhabitants in the Salmantine Sierra de Francia, in the sub-comarca of Las Quilamas, whose name comes from the Roman Valerius, who gave rise there to a villa at that time. In the Middle Ages it was repopulated by the Leonese kings, and on 19 September 1636 Philip IV created in its favour the marquisate of Valero for the duke of Béjar, which also took in El Endrinal, San Miguel, Los Santos, Frades and El Tornadizo. On its mountains, today home to black stork, black vulture and golden eagle, there were once wolves, bears and lynxes. Its natural pool, known as the Charco el Pozo, was built in 1985 on an old dam of a 1920 power plant that also supplied Frades de la Sierra.
The marquisate of Valero
Historical milestone
A noble title created by Philip IV on 19 September 1636 in favour of Juan Manuel López de Zúñiga Sotomayor y Mendoza, ninth Duke of Béjar, taking its name from the Salamancan municipality of Valero, which at the time also encompassed the territories of Endrinal, San Miguel, Los Santos, Frades and Tornadizo. It should not be confused with the Marquisate of Valero de Urría, a different title created in 1852. The Marquisate of Valero was restored in 1925 in favour of Joaquín Fernández de Córdoba y Osma, and again in 2024, by royal decree of Felipe VI, in favour of Beltrán de Soto y Fernández de Córdova, its current holder.
