What to see and do in Escurial de la Sierra

Escurial de la Sierra
Village
Escurial de la Sierra is a village in the Salamanca Sierra de Francia, in the Las Quilamas sub-comarca, at 961 metres, at the foot of the northern slope of the Sierra Mayor, also known as the Sierra de Tamames-Linares. The municipality, of holm oak groves and Pyrenean oak woodland, is home to more than a hundred species of vertebrates under a Mediterranean climate with strong Atlantic influence. Founded during the medieval Leonese resettlement, it belonged to the quarter of Peña del Rey in the jurisdiction of Salamanca, and passed to the province in 1833; in the mid-19th century it reached 603 inhabitants, reduced today to 233 through emigration in the 1960s and 1970s. At its Santa Cruz festival, on 3 May, residents wear traditional dress and dance in honour of the Santo Cristo; on 18 July they honour Santa Marina.

Activity
On 3 May, the day of the Holy Cross, there is a procession and people dance before the Holy Christ in the typical mountain costume. The other patron saint festival is Santa Marina, on 18 July, with calva championships, a gathering of carts, dances and theatre.
