What to see and do in La Sierpe

La Sierpe
Village
La Sierpe is a municipality in the comarca of Guijuelo, in the province of Salamanca, with 41 inhabitants, founded in the 14th century within the quarter of Peña del Rey of the Salamancan jurisdiction, in the Kingdom of León. Before becoming a village it was a dehesa of about one thousand four hundred hectares of pasture and oak and holm-oak woodland, owned by friars until the disentailment put it into the hands of Jacinto Mateos, and it was then divided into ninety-six shares that the villagers held in lease from parents to children. In 1939 the owner, Josefa Mateos de Reinoso, tried to evict the tenants, who won the lawsuit in the courts; when the dehesa was finally put up for sale, the villagers exercised their right of pre-emption and in 1940 took ownership of it.

Historical milestone
After winning the eviction suit that the owner had brought against them in 1939, the tenants exercised their right of pre-emption and registered the dehesa in their own names on 16 December 1940: nineteen tenants sharing ninety-six parts.

Curiosity
The estate belonged to a group of friars until the disentailment, then passed into private hands and was leased from father to son. It measured 3,400 huebras, some fourteen hundred hectares of pasture and woodland, and from it the present municipality was born.

Nature
The almost fourteen hundred hectares of the former lordship combine pasture with oak and holm oak woodland. Today they support barely two livestock farms: the register records 41 inhabitants and in winter only about twenty people live in the village.
