What to see and do in Linares de Riofrío

Linares de Riofrío
Village
Linares de Riofrío is a municipality of about 924 inhabitants in the Salamanca comarca of the Sierra de Francia, with the peak of the Mojón del Marrano, at 1383 metres, as the highest point of its territory. It was famous for its brown lime, with which the mortar of the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca was made; alongside the track that climbs towards the La Honfría area the kilns and the old factory where it was produced are preserved. La Honfría is a mixed wood of chestnut and Pyrenean oak, with holly and hazel, crossed by springs and fountains; from El Hueco and the Peñas del Agua there are panoramic views over the valley of las Quilamas and the village. Six rock-cut wine presses have been identified in its territory, and the village celebrates the Lunes de Aguas and a strawberry festival.
The dark lime of Linares
Curiosity
The bluish stone of the mountains was fired here in kilns fed with broom and oak for about five days. The dark lime of Linares was so famous that the mortar of the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca was made with it; in 1959 fifteen kilns still remained.
The rock-cut wine presses
Monument
At the spots of Coquilla, Las Viñas, Majada Llana, Las Carreteras, Los Vallejos and Relagüesa six winepresses cut into the granite outcrops have been identified, testimony to a mountain vineyard now vanished and at risk of being lost.
