What to see and do in Herguijuela del Campo

Herguijuela del Campo
Village
Herguijuela del Campo is a municipality in the comarca of Guijuelo, in the sub-comarca of Entresierras, whose territory brings together the settlements of Alberguería, Herguijuela and Santo Domingo. Its name comes from the Latin ecclesiola, little church, and possibly alludes to small early Christian or Visigothic churches; the addition Campo refers to the bare, treeless lands of the comarca. Founded in the 14th century within the quarter of Peña del Rey of the jurisdiction of Salamanca, it was then called El Erguixuela, and until the 1920s it was known as Herguijuela de la Sierpe. In the mid-19th century it had 120 inhabitants, compared with the 60 it has today.
Herguijuela, the "little church"
Curiosity
The place name comes from the Latin ecclesiola, «little church», and could allude to the small Early Christian and Visigothic oratories; the addition of «del Campo» does not mean rural area here, but open, treeless ground as against the surrounding woods and dehesas.
The change from Sierpe to Campo
Historical milestone
The municipality was called Herguijuela de la Sierpe until the 1920s, when it adopted the present name of Herguijuela del Campo; its foundation goes back to the fourteenth century, within the quarter of Peña del Rey of the jurisdiction of Salamanca.
The three villages of Las Bardas
Nature
Alberguería, Herguijuela and Santo Domingo share sixty inhabitants across 25.69 square kilometres of the micro-comarca of Las Bardas, a landscape of ploughland and wasteland that contrasts with the wooded hills of the neighbouring ranges.
