The Vía Verde de la Plata Activity · Puerto de Béjar, Sierra de Béjar, Salamanca Image of Puerto de Béjar, not of the place itself. The old Plasencia-Astorga railway line, which ran parallel to the Roman road and was closed to freight and passenger traffic in 1996, became the Vía Verde Ruta de la Plata, officially named the Camino Natural Vía Verde de la Plata since 1993. It forms part of the Red de Caminos Naturales, a programme of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food dedicated to restoring old, disused transport infrastructure for hiking and cycling, and it crosses the municipality of Puerto de Béjar, allowing the passage between the two plateaus to be travelled on foot or by bicycle.
