What to see and do in Candelario

Candelario
Village
Candelario is a municipality of about 830 inhabitants in the comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, in the province of Salamanca, declared a historic ensemble since 1975 and listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain since 2015. Its steep streets, with water channels from the ice wells, and its houses with thick walls and batipuertas —used for curing cured meats— form an ensemble of mountain architecture within the Sierras de Béjar y Francia Biosphere Reserve, declared by Unesco in 2006. Its origin is attributed to a colony of Asturian shepherds. After the Reconquest it came under the council of Ávila, and in 1209 Alfonso VIII incorporated it into the Community of Town and Land of Béjar.
The historic ensemble of Candelario
Monument
Declared a historic-artistic ensemble on 6 March 1975 and listed since 2015 among the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain, the town preserves steep streets of stone houses with thick walls and wooden galleries of more than two storeys.
The water channels and half-doors
Curiosity
Along the streets run regaderas, small channels with water from the mountain snow pits that served to clean up after singeing the pigs; the batipuertas, half doors of wood, acted as a barrier for finishing off the animals from inside the house.
The cured meats of Candlemas
Food and drink
On 2 February, Candlemas day, the pork-curing work ended with the slaughter and the tasting of the chichas. The lofts of the houses, with large sunlit galleries, served as drying rooms for the cured meat that made the town famous.
The traditional Candelario wedding
Activity
On the second Sunday of August the wedding rite is re-enacted as it was celebrated at the end of the nineteenth century, with the residents dressed in traditional costume. It has been declared a festival of regional tourist interest since 2009.
