What to see and do in Huerta

Huerta
Village
Huerta is a municipality in the comarca of Las Villas, in the province of Salamanca, situated on the banks of the Tormes just where the river turns sharply westward and forms what is known as the codo del Tormes; its municipal area, of fourteen square kilometres, borders Babilafuente, Cordovilla and Encinas de Abajo. At Los Bebederos an important Roman site has been found, with pottery of biblical themes that arrived from North Africa via the Vía de la Plata, and also dozens of engraved Visigothic slate tablets from the 5th to the 8th centuries, some with text and one with the drawing of a religious building. It has about 282 inhabitants.
The pit field of La Aceña
Monument
In the south of the municipal district a Bronze Age site of some three hectares was excavated in which dozens of circular pits open that served as granaries; its ceramics link it with the Cogotas I culture of the middle Tormes valley.
The watermill of Huerta
Monument
Documented in the sixteenth century and still standing on the Tormes, it is the survivor of the three water mills of the municipal district, alongside the vanished ones of La Piñuela and San Bricio; in them was ground the grain that gave Huerta its greatest prosperity.
The Visigothic slate tablets of Los Bebederos
Curiosity
At the spot known as Los Bebederos dozens of engraved slates of the Visigothic period have been collected, datable between the fifth and eighth centuries: mostly texts of accounts and transactions, and one with the drawing of what appears to be a religious building.
The elbow of the Tormes
Nature
As it passes through the municipal district, the Tormes turns sharply westward at the feature the residents call the elbow of the Tormes, a tight meander that determined the village's strategic position and the siting of its water mills.
The will of Canon Don Vela
Historical milestone
The name of Huerta appears for the first time in the will of the Salamanca canon Don Vela, drawn up around 1163 or 1164. Don Vela, the first known owner of the hamlet, left much of his property to the military orders.
The San Policarpo flood
Historical milestone
The Tormes flood known as the San Policarpo flood of 1626 destroyed Huerta almost completely and swept away the river's hydraulic works. It was the decisive blow in the decline the village suffered throughout the 17th century.
The end of the royal domain of Huerta
Historical milestone
After years of litigation in which the residents took the count to court, Huerta lost in 1628 its status as royal domain and was turned into a town of the lordship of Monterrey, which in the eighteenth century would be held by the House of Alba.
Calle de los Mesones
Curiosity
The village's main street preserves in its name the memory of the inns that served travellers when Huerta lay beside the road linking Salamanca and Madrid, one of the drivers of its economic boom in the sixteenth century.
