What to see and do in Encinas de Abajo

Encinas de Abajo
Village
Encinas de Abajo is a Salmantine municipality of about 615 inhabitants that brings together the main settlement and the hamlet of Cilloruelo, in the comarca of Las Villas. Its founding goes back to the medieval repopulation by the kings of León, when it was called Orzinas and was included in the quarter of Villoria under the jurisdiction of Salamanca, within the Kingdom of León; Cilloruelo, for its part, already existed in the 13th century under the name Celleruelo. With the creation of the present-day provinces in 1833, it was placed within that of Salamanca, in the Leonese Region.
The church funded by two townspeople
Monument
The parish church was built between 1899 and 1902 thanks to the exclusive financial contribution of a married couple from the village, Juan Redero and Pila Martín, with the support and blessing of the bishop of Salamanca, Tomás Cámara.
Orzinas and Celleruelo
Historical milestone
The municipality was born of the Leonese resettlement under the name of Orzinas, within the quarter of Villoria; its annexed village of Cilloruelo already existed in the thirteenth century in the form Celleruelo, a place name that points to the granaries or cillas of the ecclesiastical lordship.
A municipality of two villages
Curiosity
The municipal district brings together two settlements with their own histories, Encinas de Abajo and Cilloruelo, spread over 20.86 square kilometres of countryside. Between them they add up to little more than six hundred households, in a municipality of the association of Cantalapiedra and Las Villas.
