What to see and do in Descargamaría

Descargamaría
Village
Municipality of 105 inhabitants (2025), 49.2 km² and 481 m altitude, between Las Hurdes and the border with Salamanca (documented as 'Escargamaria' in 1323). It arose as a trading crossroads between the north and south of the sierra. In 1833 it moved from the province of Salamanca to that of Cáceres. It preserves the church of San Julián (16th century) with a 1594 altarpiece by Lucas Mitata.
El Pino Marro de Descargamaría
Activity
Festival of possible Vettone roots in which a tree from the sierra is selected, dragged to the village, and planted in the square, where it remains decorated until January, accompanied by dances and festivities.
Iglesia de San Julián el Hospitalario
Monument
16th-century parish church that preserves a 1594 altarpiece by Lucas Mitata.
Descargamaría, entre las cuencas del Tajo y el Duero
Curiosity
Descargamaría is one of only two municipalities in Extremadura with territory divided between the Tajo and Duero river basins, at a former medieval crossroads between the north and south of the Sistema Central mountain range.
