Martín de Yeltes
Village
Martín de Yeltes is a municipality of the Campo de Yeltes, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, province of Salamanca, with about 383 inhabitants, made up of Campocerrado, Castillejo de Yeltes, Collado de Yeltes and Martín. Founded during the medieval resettlement by the kings of León, it took the name Martindelryo, which evolved into Martín del Río, a name it kept until 1910, when it came to be called Martín de Yeltes in honour of the river, a change corroborated by Royal Decree in 1916. In the 19th century it was a place of passage for shepherds and pack animals coming from Extremadura on their way to León. In 1902 the municipality absorbed the territory of Campocerrado, whose residents were evicted by the Guardia Civil for being unable to pay the exorbitant rent imposed on them by the Cobaleda family, the new owners of the land.
