What to see and do in Buenamadre

Buenamadre
Village
Buenamadre is a municipality of 108 inhabitants in the Campo de Salamanca or Campo Charro district, whose territory, covering 59 square kilometres, also includes the settlements of Aldeávila de Revilla and Los Campos. It is documented as Bonam Matrem in a grant by Ferdinand II of León from January 1167, by which the king bestowed it as a lordship on the alcaide (warden) of Salamanca, Miguel Sexmiro; this may have been the same Miguel Sexmiro who, by 1221, was already recorded as deceased, when Ermigio Pérez and his wife endowed the Cathedral Chapter of Salamanca so that annual masses would be said for his soul. With the creation of the provinces in 1833, Buenamadre was placed within the province of Salamanca, in the Leonese Region. In the mid-19th century it had 196 inhabitants, almost double what it has today.

A shrine hidden in a holm oak wood in the municipal district to which people go in pilgrimage on the first Monday after Easter; until the nineteenth century the local landowners paid for bullfights to accompany the celebration.
