Martiago
Village
Martiago is a municipality in the sub-comarca of Los Agadones, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, province of Salamanca, with 252 inhabitants. Its origins lie in the Vettonian or Roman period, from which its Celtic-Roman name would derive; during work on its church a Roman votive stone appeared in 1950, and very close by stands the castro (hillfort) of Lerilla, inhabited in Vettonian and later Roman times, a sign of settlement long predating the medieval hamlet. This was resettled by the kings of León and placed within the Campo de Agadones of the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo, created in the 12th century by Fernando II of León. In the mid-19th century the place had 793 inhabitants recorded, a population that has since been dwindling. It has a church under the patronage of the Assumption of Our Lady.
