El Cubo de Don Sancho
Village
El Cubo de Don Sancho is a town in Salamanca of about 373 inhabitants whose name recalls the defensive tower (cubo) that the León kings raised in the early 13th century over the crossing of the río Huebra, part of the fortified Huebra-Yeltes line alongside other strongholds such as Buenamadre or Villares de Yeltes. The surname "de Don Sancho" was added in the 18th century, according to some authors after King Sancho IV and according to others after the infante Sancho Alfonso "the Mute", son of Alfonso XI, who was held prisoner in the town's fortress. In the 15th century the lordship belonged to the master of the Order of Santiago and to Fernán Nieto, and later passed to the marquis of Cerralbo. Through its territory runs the calzada de los Mártires, of Roman origin, and the place itself had been settled since the Iron Age.
