La Alberguería de Argañán
Village
La Alberguería de Argañán is a hamlet in Salamanca province with about 94 inhabitants, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo and the Campo de Argañán sub-comarca, founded during the Leonese resettlement of the 11th and 12th centuries. The loss of the Ribacoa in the Treaty of Alcañices of 1297 turned the town into a border settlement with Portugal, which led to the building of its castle, documented in 1474 although built in the 14th century with alterations up to the 16th. In 1643 it withstood an attack by the Portuguese governor of Beira without losing the fortress, but in 1660 it was taken by Portuguese troops and recovered for good the following year. Declared a Monumento histórico-artístico (a Spanish national heritage designation) in 1949, it is today in ruins and used as agricultural outbuildings.
