Arapiles
Village
Arapiles is a town in the province of Salamanca with about 744 inhabitants, situated at 840 metres of altitude, eleven kilometres south of Salamanca, on flat terrain dotted with isolated hills such as the Arapil Grande, at 908 metres. On these hills was fought, on 22 July 1812, the battle that gives the village its name: the allied troops — Spanish, English and Portuguese — led by the Duke of Wellington defeated the French forces of Auguste Marmont, at a decisive moment in the War of Independence. The municipality also includes the settlements of El Ventorro, La Pinilla, Las Torres and Orejudos, and is crossed by the Ruta de la Plata motorway and the N-630 road.
Battle of the Arapiles (Salamanca)
Historical milestone
Wellington defeated marshal Marmont on 22 July 1812 with some fifty thousand allies against as many French; French casualties were around twelve thousand five hundred and the victory opened the road to Madrid for the allies in the middle of the Peninsular War.

Nature
Two isolated witness hills in the middle of an utterly flat plain, formed by differential erosion; control of them decided the deployment of the armies in 1812 and they remain the natural viewpoint of the Campo Charro.

A facility that explains on the ground the course of the day of July 1812 and from which the waymarked itineraries across the battlefield start, next to the commemorative monument raised at the foot of the hills.
