Carbajosa de la Sagrada
Village
Carbajosa de la Sagrada is a municipality in the Salamancan Campo Charro, with around 7,800 inhabitants, which also includes Carpihuelo, El Montalvo, Pelagarcía and Navahonda. It was founded by Alfonso IX of León in the early 13th century, and appears documented as Carvayosa la Sagrada in December 1248: its name comes from carbajos, the oaks, whose hereditary form in western León gave the Spanish carbajo and never carballo. In 1812, in the run-up to the Battle of Salamanca (los Arapiles), the allied army camped in Carbajosa and its surroundings, which is why the village's name appears in numerous English and French books about that campaign. It celebrates its patron saint, San Roque, on 16 August.
