Santa Marta de Tormes
Village
Santa Marta de Tormes is a Salamancan municipality located south of the Tormes river, in the Campo Charro district; with nearly 15,000 inhabitants, it is today the most populous town in the Salamanca alfoz (surrounding district). Acheulean settlements (between 500,000 and 100,000 years BC) and Mousterian ones have been found in its soil, along with Neolithic remains, although there are no traces of the Bronze Age or Antiquity. The present-day settlement arose from the medieval resettlements by the kings of León, and its first written mention dates from December 1201, in a land-purchase document granted by the archpriest Pedro Lucio; the archive of Salamanca Cathedral also preserves a Libro de Apeos (land survey book) from around 1400 detailing its farmland, vineyards and orchards.
