What to see and do in Calvarrasa de Arriba

Calvarrasa de Arriba
Village
Calvarrasa de Arriba is a municipality in the Salamanca Campo Charro, with a single population centre and around 604 inhabitants. Its original name, given by the kings of León, was Calvarrasa de Genescal: “calva” because it is a bare plain without vegetation, in reference to the highlands near the village. The Ribera stream, which runs along its left slope, eroded over time both the Arapiles esplanade — where the battle of 1812 was fought, a few kilometres away — and the rugged relief beside the baroque hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, which the village still has. It also has a square, stone bullring without stands, and was formerly linked to Salamanca by the Vía de la Plata railway, though without a station of its own.
Hermitage of la Virgen de la Peña
Monument
A Baroque hermitage dedicated to the Virgen de la Peña that stands beside the village, a short distance from the Arapiles hills where in 1812 one of the key battles of the Peninsular War was decided.
