Monastery of Santa María de la Vega Monument · Renedo de la Vega, Vega-Valdavia, Palencia A Cistercian monastery with notable Mudéjar elements, today badly deteriorated, which remains the most important building of a municipality that groups together Albalá, Moslares and Santillán de la Vega. It was founded as a daughter house of the monastery of Santa María de Benavides by Rodrigo Rodríguez Girón and Inés Pérez, who in 1215 donated to the community properties received from King Henry I of Castile in Renedo and other villages near Carrión de los Condes. The founders' tombs were sold around 1925 and are now kept at the Hispanic Society in New York; another sarcophagus from the group can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Palencia. Although it has been a listed Monumento Histórico-Artístico (an earlier heritage-protection designation, predecessor to the BIC) since 1931, its ruinous state keeps it on the Red List of Endangered Heritage.
