What to see and do in Buenavista de Valdavia

Buenavista de Valdavia
Village
Buenavista de Valdavia is a municipality of about 290 inhabitants in the Palencia district of la Valdavia, situated on the right bank of the river of the same name, at 956 metres above sea level, beside the Camino Real de la Valdavia, a Jacobean route between San Vicente de la Barquera and Carrión de los Condes. It was called Agüero de Yuso until 1789, and as early as 1224 King Ferdinand III and the count of Saldaña and Carrión signed the Fuero de Agüero. In 1975 it merged with Arenillas de San Pelayo and Renedo de Valdavia, of which it became the capital. On the Cerro de las Cuestas it preserves the ruins of the 10th-century castle of Agüero, with whose stones the Iglesia Vieja de San Justo y Pastor was built, today a community centre where exhibitions are held every August, during the festivals of its patron saints.
Old Church of San Justo y Pastor
Monument
Built with stones from the old castle of Agüero, it was restored in the nineties, when medieval pieces and sarcophagi appeared beneath its floor; today it functions as the village's exhibition hall.
Charter of Agüero
Historical milestone
In 1224 King Fernando III and the local nobility signed the Fuero de Agüero, the founding charter of the settlement; the present name of Buenavista is not fixed until 1789, already in the twilight of the Ancien Régime.
New church by Fernando de Unamuno
Monument
The parish church that replaced the old one was unofficially inaugurated on 21 December 1933, to a design by Fernando de Unamuno, son of the writer and architect of several Castilian works. Born in Bilbao in 1892, he qualified at the Madrid School of Architecture in 1918 and, after working in Cádiz, moved in 1920 to Palencia, where he was municipal architect from 1925 until his retirement in 1959; numerous works in the Palencia capital are owed to him, including the opening of the Gran Vía and the renovation of the Teatro Principal.
Riversides of the Valdavia
Nature
The Valdavia crosses the municipal district from north to south and the village sits on its right bank; its course orders the whole valley, from the moors of the north to the confluence with the Pisuerga.
