Villabasta de Valdavia
Village
Villabasta de Valdavia is a hamlet of about thirty inhabitants at 920 metres above sea level, in the comarca of Vega-Valdavia, province of Palencia, situated at the foot of the pilgrim route that linked San Vicente de la Barquera with Carrión de los Condes along the Camino Real de la Valdavia; in 1900 it had 174 inhabitants. Its name is thought to derive from Villa Auasta, referring to a resettler named Avasta. Between 1350 and 1366 it was a place of behetría under the lordship of Juan Rodríguez de Cisneros, and throughout the 16th to 18th centuries its residents pursued several lawsuits with the Concejo de la Mesta over the passage of livestock along the drove roads crossing its territory. Its baroque church of San Vicente has two naves and a dome, and the town was the birthplace of the Augustinian friar Lucas Espinosa, a philologist of Amazonian languages.
