What to see and do in Congosto de Valdavia

Congosto de Valdavia
Village
Congosto de Valdavia is a municipality in the district of la Valdavia, in the province of Palencia, at 1,050 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Jacobean route that linked San Vicente de la Barquera with Carrión de los Condes via the Camino Real de la Valdavia. Besides the capital, it comprises the settlements of Cornoncillo, Villanueva de Abajo and the Caserío de Tablares; in 1793 it was a crown town with 89 households, and by 1874 it had grown to 476 inhabitants, 92 houses and 7 mills. Its church of Nuestra Señora de los Palacios, built of ashlar, combines transitional Romanesque with Gothic, with star-ribbed vaults and a Gothic doorway with archivolts and an ogee arch. On Good Friday it stages a re-enactment of the Passion of Christ, and in May it holds a pilgrimage to the hermitage of the Virgen de Otero. It has about 130 inhabitants.
