Villaeles de Valdavia
Village
Villaeles de Valdavia is a hamlet in the comarca of Vega-Valdavia, in the province of Palencia, with about forty-five inhabitants, at 890 metres above sea level, situated at the foot of the pilgrim route that linked San Vicente de la Barquera with Carrión de los Condes along the Camino Real de la Valdavia. Its name recalls the Hispano-Roman Félix and the valley of the river Abia, today the Valdavia. It is already documented in 905 through a donation that the powerful noble Osorio Díaz made to the monastery of San Benito de Sahagún, confirmed in 1068 by Alfonso VI, which included numerous neighbouring places, several of them now deserted. In the 16th century it comprised seventy households, and today it lives on dryland cereal farming and sheep raising.
