What to see and do in Báscones de Ojeda

Báscones de Ojeda
Village
Báscones de Ojeda is a village in the Boedo-Ojeda area, in Palencia province, in the upper part of the Boedo river valley, which divides it into two quarters, in the transition zone between the Castilian plateau and the Cantabrian Mountains. Its territory, of 18.56 square kilometres and 963 metres above sea level, has fertile irrigated river meadows, with poplar groves and cereal crops, while streams such as Valdontina and Matalobera flow down to the valley from wooded areas of pines and oaks. It lived off flax and linseed oil farming, and preserves two restored mills by the river and a 16th-century baptismal font; it reached 468 inhabitants in 1829 and today has about 135.
Church of San Bartolomé de Báscones
Monument
A masonry church with a nave of three bays covered by groin vaults and a dome, which holds five altarpieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the main one was carved in 1773 by the master Eugenio Elices.
Romanesque voussoirs of the Báscones cemetery
Curiosity
In the graveyard nine voussoirs and two cornice fragments are preserved from the doorway of the twelfth-century Romanesque church that preceded the present one, with the geometric decoration typical of late Romanesque.
Fair of el Ajete
Activity
Every April the village holds a fair devoted to the ajete, the tender variety of garlic grown in the huerta plots of the Boedo and used in scrambled eggs, soups and stews of the Ojeda kitchen.
Festivities of la Virgen del Boedo
Activity
On the third weekend of August the pilgrimage festival of the Virgen del Boedo is rounded off with sporting events along the tracks of the valley, among them a marathon and a mountain bike ride.
