Ayuela
Village
Ayuela, or Ayuela de Valdavia, is a hamlet in the comarca of Vega-Valdavia, in the province of Palencia, about 80 kilometres from the provincial capital and at 900 metres above sea level, set at the confluence of the El Avión and El Valcuende valleys, between the mountain formations of Alto Cutral and La Manguilla. Its territory, rich in springs, is divided among farmland, oak-wooded hills, cereal páramos and scrubland where juniper is the dominant species, so much so that it gave its name to the village's cultural association, the Peña de los Enebros. The river Avión crosses Ayuela before joining the Valdavia at Renedo de Valdavia. The hamlet, which had 279 inhabitants in 1900 and today has fewer than fifty, celebrates San Esteban with bonfires and was the birthplace of the Augustinian friar Antolín Merino, editor of fray Luis de León.
