Villasarracino
Village
Villasarracino is a village of around 125 inhabitants at 840 metres of altitude, in the Palencia stretch of Tierra de Campos, documented since the year 932; it was once among the ten most populated localities in the province, with 1,098 residents, and in the 14th century it maintained two churches and sixteen clergymen. It is one of the localities on the Camino de Santiago del Norte, on its Besaya route. Despite what its name suggests, there is no evidence of a Saracen settlement: the most likely etymology points to the name of its resettler, as is the case with other nearby localities, Villanuño, Villasur and Villafruela, founded between 878 and 880 during the strong resettlement movement driven by Alfonso III north of the Duero, with settlers coming from Cantabria, Asturias and the Basque lands.
