What to see and do in Castrillo de Villavega

Castrillo de Villavega
Village
Castrillo de Villavega is a municipality in Palencia province with about 167 inhabitants, at 856 metres above sea level, split in two by the Valdavia river and joined by an 18th-century classicist stone bridge; the main core, Castrillo, houses the town hall and the peace court, while Villavega sits barely 300 metres away on the opposite bank. In the Early Middle Ages a castle or watchtower was built there, an outpost of the Agüero de Buenavista de Valdavia castle in the resettlement of the valley; its ashlar blocks were reused to build the church of San Quirico, of Romanesque origin, which retains its doorway with round arches and historiated capitals. It also preserves a hermitage with a 16th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling, and its economy remains agricultural, with some sheep farming.
