What to see and do in Bárcena de Campos

Bárcena de Campos
Village
Bárcena de Campos is a hamlet of just over fifty inhabitants, on the right bank of the Valdavia river, in the province of Palencia, about 22 kilometres north of the Way of St James (Camino de Santiago). With a strongly Jacobean character, at the foot of the Esperina heights the Besaya route, coming from Suances, meets the Camino Real de la Valdavia, which linked San Vicente de la Barquera with Carrión de los Condes. It preserves the remains of a Neolithic site at San Cebrián, from around 2500 BC, and of the medieval hermitage of the Virgen de Esperina, whose 13th-century carving is now venerated in the 16th-century church of Santiago. The hamlet, which had 259 inhabitants in 1900, retains a strong attachment to its Good Friday procession.
