Abia de las Torres
Village
Abia de las Torres lies at 840 metres, at the end of the valley of the river Valdavia, in the Palencia Tierra de Campos. Ptolemy cited it as Avia among the Vaccaean cities, an oppidum that may have been the capital of a portion of that territory or a walled enclosure around the castle hill; a Roman road linked it with Saldaña, and from that period remain remains such as a tall kiln and a fragment of a funerary tombstone, now embedded in the portico of the parish church, built in 1776. In the 12th century, Alfonso VII granted the place a charter that gave equal rights to Castilians, Franks, Moors and Jews. The church also preserves a Romanesque baptismal font. With about 165 inhabitants, it borders Osorno la Mayor, Villadiezma, Villaherreros and Villaprovedo.
