Valdeolmillos
Village
Valdeolmillos is a hamlet in the El Cerrato comarca, in the province of Palencia, with just over fifty inhabitants, compared with about 505 in the mid-19th century. Its name comes from the Latin vallis and ulmus, 'elm', with the diminutive 'illos', and means place of the small elms. The place was resettled after the reconquest of the area by the armies of Alfonso III at the end of the 9th century, together with the neighbouring Quintanilla de Valdeolmillos, now depopulated. Between the late 11th and early 12th century its Romanesque-style parish church of San Juan Bautista was built, declared a monument in 1982; its tower can be seen from far away across the Cerrato plain.
