Villamuriel de Cerrato
Village
Municipality in the El Cerrato comarca, in Palencia, situated seven kilometres from the capital and at 727 m of altitude, in the valley of the río Carrión, near its confluence with the Pisuerga; besides the town of the same name, it comprises the settlements of Calabazanos, Ciudad Jardín Virgen del Milagro and Los Olmillos, and has about 6,500 inhabitants in total. Its name comes from Villa and the personal name Maurelli, cited in a donation from the year 967. Its economy combines rain-fed and irrigated agriculture, livestock farming and the agri-food industry, as well as the automotive sector, with the Renault plant installed there since 1978. The Canal de Castilla crosses it with its oval lock number 33, and its fortress church of Santa María began to be built at the end of the 12th century.
