Frómista
Village
Frómista is a market town in Palencia of around 730 inhabitants on the Camino Francés and beside the Canal de Castilla, which reached here in 1773. Its period of greatest splendour was the Middle Ages: around 1066 the Monastery of San Martín was founded with the church of San Martín de Tours, held to be one of the most complete Romanesque temples in Europe, and in 1118 Queen Urraca gave it to the Benedictine monks of Carrión. Between the 12th and 15th centuries the town was divided into two lordships, the ecclesiastical one of the Abbot of Carrión and the civil one of the lords of Frómista, until Gómez Benavides unified them in 1427. The Camino de Santiago also left pilgrim hospitals here and linked Frómista to the figure of San Telmo, a canon from Palencia born in 1185 who ended up preaching across northern Spain.
