What to see and do in Requena de Campos

Requena de Campos
Village
Requena de Campos, a Palencia hamlet of fewer than thirty inhabitants, is crossed both by the Canal de Castilla, which here changes watershed from the Pisuerga to the Carrión, and by the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. It was acquired in the Middle Ages through the marriage of Gómez Manrique de Lara, first lord of Requena, and later passed through the Rojas and Velasco lineages; in the 14th century its church of San Miguel and the hermitage of Santa Marina came to have nine clergymen, and the parish archive preserves papal bulls dating up to 1414. The later impoverishment contrasts with that historical wealth. It preserves adobe houses, circular and square dovecotes, and the bridge that the Canal de Castilla built between 1781 and 1791; its aqueduct, bridge and irrigation channel have been a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1991.
