Itero de la Vega
Village
Itero de la Vega is a village in Palencia of around 145 inhabitants, in Tierra de Campos, situated in the floodplain of the Pisuerga and the first stopping point on the Camino Francés in the province; its medieval name, Fitero, comes from the Latin fictum, fixed by a boundary marker. It was repopulated in the 9th-10th centuries by Alfonso III of Asturias, and received a charter from Fernando Mentález, lord of Melgar de Fernamental; the passage of pilgrims led to the building of its bridge over the Pisuerga in the time of Alfonso VI, cited in the Codex Calixtinus as Pons Fitere. The infantas Berenguela and Blanca, daughters of Alfonso VIII, were raised there, and in 1529 the town obtained rights of sovereignty from Henry IV. It preserves the church of San Pedro, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad and the rollo de justicia, Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1966.
