San Román de la Cuba
Village
San Román de la Cuba is a hamlet of just over fifty inhabitants in the valley of the Valdeginate river, in the Tierra de Campos region. Its origins go back to the Mozarabic resettlement of the 9th and 10th centuries, although Acheulean hand axes and earlier ceramic remains have been found; the first written mentions date from the 11th century, linked to the monastery of Sahagún. Francisco Antonio Caballero, bishop of Segovia and Apostolic Inquisitor, was born here in the 17th century. It lives on rain-fed cereal and alfalfa, and preserves dovecotes and threshing-floor huts typical of Tierra de Campos. Its church of San Juan Bautista, from that same century, holds Baroque altarpieces and a Virgen de la Leche. At the end of June it lights the bonfire of San Juan, its patron saint.
