Villalcón
Village
Villalcón is a hamlet of around forty-five inhabitants at 815 metres of altitude, in Tierra de Campos, between Villada and Cervatos de la Cueza, beside one of the branches of the Cuezas that forms the río Valdeginate; against the 364 residents it gathered in 1842. It lives from dryland cereal farming, alfalfa and sunflowers. Its church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) for its Mudejar coffered ceiling protecting the presbytery, holds 17th-century altarpieces; it has a single nave with no transept or columns and a tower some twenty metres tall topped by a rooster-shaped weathervane. At its entrance, slabs with Latin inscriptions attributed to ancient counts of the place are preserved.
