Población de Campos
Village
Población de Campos is a village on the French Way, in Tierra de Campos, province of Palencia, beside the Ucieza river, with 119 inhabitants (INE 2025). Its name comes from the Latin Populatio; from the mid-12th century it was a lordship of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, by privilege of Alfonso VII granted in Salamanca in 1140. At the height of the Camino de Santiago it had two pilgrims' hospitals, that of Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia and that of San Miguel. Its population, 861 inhabitants in 1900, fell to 735 in 1930 and to 500 in 1960. At the top of the village stands the church of Santa María Magdalena, its patron saint, already mentioned in 14th-century documents; the current building, from the 16th century, took its final form after the renovations of 1749 to 1753.
