What to see and do in Villaprovedo

Villaprovedo
Village
Villaprovedo is a hamlet in the La Ojeda comarca, in Palencia, situated in a high, airy spot, above old wine cellars used to preserve wine; its urban centre broadly preserves the layout it had in the 16th century. Documented in 1190, when Alfonso VIII ceded it to Queen Urraca López de Haro together with Vileña, La Vid and Pedralada, it depended on the monastery of Santa María la Real de Vileña, founded by that same queen. It never exceeded the 545 inhabitants it had in 1904; today it has around forty-five. It preserves the Gothic church of San Sebastián, in stone and brick with a Baroque portal, which holds a 15th-century recumbent tomb, and celebrates its festivities in honour of the saint on 20 January.
Church of San Sebastián de Villaprovedo
Monument
A Gothic church built in stone and brick with a Baroque doorway, dedicated to the patron saint of the village; its feast is celebrated on 20 January and the main one of the year is La Minerva, on the Friday before Corpus Christi.

Curiosity
Inside San Sebastián an excellent tomb with a recumbent statue carved in the fifteenth century is preserved, a funerary piece of unexpected quality in a rural parish of the Boedo valley.
Villaprovedo granted to Urraca López de Haro
Historical milestone
In 1190 Alfonso VIII of Castile granted Villaprovedo to Queen Urraca López de Haro; the Becerro de Behetrías of 1361 confirms that the place belonged to the monastery of Santa María la Real de Vileña.
